“The total liberation and unification of Africa under an All-African Socialist Government must be the primary objective of all Black revolutionaries throughout the world. It is an objective which, when achieved, will bring about the fulfillment of the aspirations of Africans and people of African descent everywhere. It will at the same time advance the triumph of the international socialist revolution, and the onward progress towards world communism, under which, every society is ordered on the principle of –from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.” — Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah

Call for Slogans and Themes for African Liberation Day

Slogans and themes are an essential aspect of political education. They deliver a short memorable message that resonances a deeper meeting.

African Liberation Day was founded in 1958 by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, on the occasion of the First Conference of Independent States held in Accra, Ghana and attended by eight independent African states. The 15th of April was declared “Africa Freedom Day,” to mark each year the onward progress of the liberation movement, and to symbolize the determination of the people of Africa to free themselves from foreign domination and exploitation.  On the 25th of May 1963, thirty-one African Heads of state convened a summit meeting to found the Organization of African Unity (OAU). They renamed Africa Freedom Day “African Liberation Day” and changed its date to May 25th.

Each year the All-African People’s Revolutionary Party organizes a process to select the theme for African Liberation Day (ALD).  We encourage the use of the same collectively selected theme at African Liberation Day celebrations around the world.  The African Liberation Day 2017 theme was “African Youth Organizing Against All Settler and Neo-Colonial Regimes: From DRC (Congo), to Standing Rock and Palestine!” Two years ago in 2016 the theme was “African Women and Youth on the Frontlines: Revolutionary Pan-Africanism is the Only Solution”.  Last year we helped organize and publicize ALD symposiums, rallies, marches and workshops in Africa and the Diaspora.  We held African Liberation Day in Britain, several cities around the USA, Canada and the Caribbean. We celebrated ALD in West Africa in Ghana, Gambia and Guinea Bissau, in East Africa in Kenya and Tanzania and in Southern Africa in Zimbabwe and Azania/South Africa.  This year we plan to expand our efforts in Africa and the Diaspora.

This year we are reaching out to a broader audience for suggestions and ideas for an overall theme as well as slogans to be used during the various ALD activities.  With your help, we can expand this work to institutionalize African Liberation Day as a process that calls on Africans worldwide to build on our victories toward Pan-Africanism.  We call on all Africans to not only mobilize for the official day 25th May.  We must use this day as a rallying point to politically educate and organize all Africans toward Pan-Africanism.

Please send us your suggestions on a theme for African Liberation Day 2018 to info@aaprp-intl.org. Also send slogans that you feel are appropriate for our rallies, symposiums, seminars and marches.  We will select a theme in January from ideas submitted and share the selection with everyone interested in organizing ALD.

Let us know if you are planning to organize ALD in your area.  We are available to assist with both publicity and political education.  We willingly share our experience with 42 consecutive years of organizing ALD.  Together we can institutionalize ALD
